Each year, people around the world litter more than 7.5 million tons of waste. As a society, when it comes to littering and responsible disposal of waste products, we still have a long way to go.
The 2022 National Litter Audit, conducted by Keep New Zealand Beautiful, found that, overall, the litter problem in Aotearoa is growing worse. If litter, collected from a 1000m2 area, was extrapolated across all of New Zealand, figures would total 3,686,340,000 individual fragments, 258,043,800 litres worth of takeaway containers, 364,965,000 litres of disposable nappies, and 2142 cigarette butts for each person in the country.
Wayne Gazley established the Keep Hutt Valley Beautiful Trust, which organises events and supports numerous other clean up and beautification groups throughout the Hutt Valley. It is affiliated with Keep New Zealand Beautiful, which has been inspiring Kiwis to "Do the Right Thing" and Keep New Zealand Beautiful since 1967.
Rob Wilson is from Ghost Diving NZ. This is a charity promoting environmental awareness and conservation by removing rubbish from the sea floor and coastline. The Charity encourages volunteers to help in the global fight against pollution, with emphasis on education, conservation and exploration.
Lorraine Shaab coordinates the Petone Beach Clean Up Crew, who remove glass, needles and other rubbish such as plastic nurdles that build up on the beach. Nurdles are tiny pieces of plastic that are melted down to make just about every plastic item we use. Nurdles "escape" from factory premises or during transport and end up on our beaches. They get ingested by sea birds and fish, progressing up the food chain so that traces of plastic are eaten by all sorts of wildlife, and humans too.
Another of the group’s projects as been picking up 700 nails weighing 1.8 kg left on the beach beside Seaview Marina after bonfires of wooden pallets.
Well after 16 years as a member of the Hutt City Rotary Club and a decade on the Board my presidential year has begun and while it will take me some time to grow into the role, I’m excited by the direction our club is moving.
Rotabiz is on a roll. The Board recently decided to make a small tweak to change the Corporate tag to Business and to reduce the annual fee to that of a individual member to ensure all members of our club who manage or own businesses are all recognised as being part of our Rotabiz family within Hutt city Rotary.
We now have 22 businesses represented within our club and this all bodes well for the future for both our club and the wider community we serve. We were recently recognised as the fastest growing Rotary club in the region, which is a tribute to us all, thanks largely to the businesspeople we have attracted to the club.
The very reason for Rotary was developed by a visionary called Paul Harris back in 1905 who knew if he could bring professionals and businessmen from diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas, form meaningful lifelong friendships and serve the community and humanitarian projects Rotary could prosper, and it did. Now, of course, we have many female members too.
The success or otherwise of our club will depend on our ability to be relevant to our business community with members networking and providing support to each other, while continuing to serve and support our local community.
I’m also glad that the Hutt Valley clubs are collaborating more and with our sister club Hutt Valley joining us from time to time to provide a bigger audience to some inspirational speakers from both community and business leaders.
In addition, early planning is now in place to implement the Lifting “The lifting the Lid” project for mental health throughout the Hutt Valley secondary schools with most of the region’s Rotary clubs participating and providing seed funding. We have just raised close to $10,000 from our business house bowling day last week which was a lot of fun and I’m confident that all businesses represented there will have enjoyed it.
My special thanks to Murray, Linton, Gaylene, Rob, Katrina and Craig for their support to make it work so well.
The Lifting the Lid project will require a joint initiative between the Hutt Valley clubs to raise the significant amount of money needed to sustain the project over the next few years.
I look forward to our next meeting – a combined one with Hutt Valley Rotary.
Regards, Cameron Tooley President Rotary Hutt City
Fun at the Rotary Hutt City Corporate Bowls day, supported by 18 teams playing round robin. Lots of laughs and a bit of skill involved occasionally. Best of all we raised $10,000 to go towards Lifting the Lid programme to help students with mental health support.

We'd love you to join us at Circa Theatre on Tuesday 16th July for a 6.30 pm show of Penny Ashton's reimagined Sense & Sensibility
A classic tale of sisters, suitors and losing your senses. Six spectacular women breathe life into 24 characters in this colourful romp through the British Regency period. Left destitute on their father’s death, sensible Elinor and madly passionate Marianne are seeking true love and happiness – but just what secrets are the gentlemen hiding behind their flannel waistcoats?
Based on Jane Austen’s masterpiece, Sense and Sensibility is the latest rambunctious rewrite by Penny Ashton (Olive Copperbottom, Promise and Promiscuity) and is Ashton’s directorial debut. Austen fans and novices alike will delight in the hilarity, throbbing hearts and vivid theatricality of this bold production.
2hrs 15min, incl. 15min interval.
Tickets are $55 each. If we get more than 20 people the tickets are discounted and it can be a club fundraiser.
6.30 pm show, finishing at 8.45 pm. Plenty early-enough to get home and rest before the Breakfast meeting the next day! :)
Option to meet prior from 5 pm for a drink and a bite to eat in the Circa Lounge
Remember to bring some loose change along to the meeting so you can contribute if you answer a Quizlett question incorrectly. :)
If you should have any interesting stories about fellow Rotarians then please pass them onto Craig so he can share them at the meeting. Email: craig@packprod.co.nz
