President's Report
Hi Rotabizans,
Firstly I want to thank Richard Nabarro for the great job he is doing with the newsletter. Not an easy undertaking (Ask Bob)
We continue to be a club that get things done. At our last meeting we raised close to $200 to go towards new bright orange printed vests for the Petone Beach clean group who volunteer to clean up our beaches. Big help now having the ability to pay donations by stripe (eftpos). Thanks Barry!!
The bright orange safety vests will be printed with both the "Petone Beach Clean Up organisation" logo and "Hutt City Rotary" logo which is great and I am hopeful we might as a club assist at least once a year to help make a difference on our beaches.
Last month we held our 5th Corporate Bowls fun day and once again it was a sell out with all 18 teams being sponsored with a lot of fun had by all.
As a result we will have generated approximately $10k for seed funding towards the "Lifting the Lid" mental health program expected to kick off later this year.
This program is in partnership with the big four public secondary schools in the region and will make a huge difference to how the students access support they need.
Our club is taking a lead to get collaboration from all Hutt Valley Rotary clubs to provide enough seed funding to get the program underway: with one of our newest members, Darren Gray, playing a pivotal role, liaising with the Principles within the local secondary Schools we plan to support.
Darren will report back quarterly to provide the club with feedback from Principles and students as to how effective the program has been in their Schools.
Next week we will have an excellent speaker, one of our own Michael Markham, who will introduce "The Kendon's way" What this accountancy business does differently to the others.
He is less interested in looking backwards, but what it takes to turn good businesses into a great ones and the key steps businesses must do to get meaningful results.
I strongly urge you all to bring a business colleague or client or supplier along to hear Michael's address.
We will also have our members Conal McKenna (Booste People) and Robert Dong (Blackgates Optometrists) give us a quick five minute insight to their businesses.
We will also induct Stuart Hurst from Equip Recruitment into the club formerly. Stu will be presenting as the main speaker at our next Rotabiz meeting on 4 September, covering the current market forces in recruitment in Wellington. This also promises to be a very interesting presentation, so bring someone along.
Regards, Cameron Tooley President Rotary Hutt City
(A bit more about Michael) He is Chief Executive of PFK Kendons chartered accountants and business advisers for the Wellington region. He joined us as a Rotabiz Corporate member in February earlier this year, and will be our speaker next week.
"I love working with people to help them achieve their goals and put to bed the problems that keep them awake at night. Ultimately accountability is key, together with embracing technology to improve efficiency".
In addition to accountancy, Michael covers the following key areas of practice:
Business strategy and best practice operations
Governance
Audit and assurance
Business valuations
Specialist forensic assignments
[Editor's note: As a former internal auditor and risk manager, looking forward to hearing more on Wednesday!]
Today's date August 2 On 2 August 1776, in Philadelphia, most of the 55 members of the Continental Congress signed the parchment copy of the American Declaration of Independence.
Looking Back.....Fighting Litter and Debris in Hutt Valley and on the Foreshore 17 July
Wayne Gazley (Keep Hutt Valley Beautiful), Lorraine Shabb (The Petone Beach Clean Up Crew) and Andrew Stewart (Ghost Divers) provided key facts and figures on the fight against litter and debris. These were some of the points made:
(Wayne) Plastic bottles ended up on Petone Beach, caught up in the storm water drainage along the Hutt Valley;
Boy racers leave tyre marks on roads, the rubber gets washed away into the drains and end up in the sea;
Microplastics are now being found in the human body, not just fish: is plastic the new asbestos?
(Lorraine) The Western end of Petone Beach and the area close to Seaview attract the most debris;
(Andrew) Globally fishing nets are lost each year, greater than the surface area of Scotland;
20 tons of rubbish has been lifted from Wellington harbour including 142 e-scooters.
Sobering comments from each of our speakers.........
Before embarking on a trip to the USA, Ganesh left us with a sparking musical memory at our recent breakfast meeting, singing Van Morrison's "Days Like This". Recorded in the 1990s, it has been a staple of Van Morrison's concerts in recent years.
It became the official anthem of the peace movement in Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Office used it along with radio favourite ''Brown Eyed Girl'' as theme music for a television advertisement promoting the ceasefire. He performed it for an audience of 60–80,000 people when President Bill Clinton visited Belfast on 30 November 1995.
IYM Residential 2024 with Pertronic saw students stay together at a Silverstream Retreat, Upper Hutt over a six day period. Each day, the group travelled to a variety of science and technology businesses, Crown Research Institutes and tertiary education providers in the Wellington region.
We were able to sponsor two students, Fairy Bodalia and Liana Fecteau to attend the programme. The students had a wonderful week, and below is a thank you from Liana.
More on the event in coming weeks.......

Fund Raiser 16 July Sense & Sensibility
With thanks to Katrina for organising, 24 of us (apt as there were 24 characters in the show!) ventured to the Circa Theatre for Penny Ashton's reimagined Sense & Sensibility.
Extremely humourous, fast paced, energetic with colourful costumes, this was a great night out.....and more than $350 was raised too!
[Editor's note: coming soon at Circa in November, Penny Ashton's one woman show "The Tempestuous" based on a certain Will Shakespeare's "The Tempest"....she herself will play 13 characters.....
A doctor, lawyer, and a Rotarian in charge of fundraising all die and arrive at the Pearly Gates about the same time. St. Peter tells them they may each have one thing to take with them to Heaven.
The doctor is first, and asks for $1 million. This is given and proceeds to enter Heaven. The lawyer, not to be outdone, asks for $2 million. "Very well," say St. Peter and opens the gate to Heaven for the lawyer.
Finally it is time for the Rotarian, who had just finished a fundraising project for The Rotary Foundation. St. Peter asks him what he would like to take to Heaven. The fundraiser moves up very close to St. Peter, and in a soft voice asks, "It it's not too much trouble, could I just have the names of those two people who were ahead of me in line?"
One of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (according to Stephen Covey), the origin of this phrase may stem from the Prayer of St. Francis which contains these words:''O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand....''
A final shout out to our friends at Hutt Valley Rotary for their Big Hats High Teas fundraiser this coming Sunday, 4 August. (And didn't their flourescent cowboy hats light up a dull Wednesday morning?!) This is to aid Wellington Life Flight Trust to outfit their new fixed wing planes to enable at risk, new born babies and up to full sized adults to be transferred to Wellington hospital from the regions in haste and safety.
