President's Report
Thanks to all of you who volunteered to collect for the Salvation Army and The Te Omanga Hospice. They are valued organisations in the Hutt Valley and it’s nice to be able to play our part as Rotarians to serve our community by supporting them.
You will have heard from Barry at our last meeting that it is important to let Anna know ASAP if you have registered to come to a meeting and don’t show as the club gets charged regardless. We will ask members to pay when they are registered to come but do not notify Anna with at least 2 days notice.
On Saturday 24th May we have the Tough guy/gal challenge to marshal and earn valuable funds for the club and we are still looking for volunteers. It is important you are aware that our membership subs are largely used to cover Rotary District and International levies. The board does its best to keep your subs as low as possible but the club has various calls on its funds, such as paying for speakers' breakfasts and various other costs. So inevitably, some of our fundraising must be used for those "admin" matters, which makes your participation in fundraisers very important. Your support is greatly appreciated - remember it's mostly going to community causes,
It was great to get a business address from Katrina at the last meeting she did a great job and was very entertaining. If you would like the opportunity to showcase your business please signal this to Richard Gibbens so he can use you either as the main speaker or a back up should our speaker being unable to meet the commitment.
The day is getting close and we still need 11 more marshals for the Tough Guy/Gal Challenge in Wainuiomata on Saturday, 24 May. Andy Soper is coordinating this.
Our volunteers make sure nobody veers away from the course and your help will raise $2,300 towards our community and youth projects.
The weather can be challenging but there is great camaraderie and it’s such fun to watch competitors struggling through muddy ponds etc. 😊 If you prefer to stay inside, there are also 4-5 indoor volunteer spots available.
Please talk to anyone you know who might like to help. It’s a good opportunity for young people to get involved in a Rotary project.
Another community group has asked for help earlier in the week - Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd from 8.45am - 1.00pm and Friday 23rd 7.45am – 2.00pm.
We will also receive a per head contribution for anyone who can make it on those days.
District Assembly: Saturday 24 May, 10am- 3pm, including a light lunch.
Venue: Palmerston North Conference & Function Centre, 354 Main Street, Palmerston North
Tea & coffee on arrival and available all day. There is a small charge for lunch.
There will be sessions for Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers and information about the pilot project, Foundation, and membership. Any club member, including directors and other office holders are welcome and encouraged to come to learn more about the Rotary world.
Did you know that the 16th of May is Pink Shirt day in New Zealand?
Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness and creating a community where all people feel safe, valued and respected, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion or cultural background.
Pink Shirt Day is the day Aotearoa comes together to take a stand against bullying. The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand (MHFNZ) has run the campaign since 2012, inspiring tangata to:
Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!
Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new student was harassed for wearing pink.
And in history:
1568: Mary Queen of Scots fled to England seeking the protection of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth.
1929: The first Oscars were presented in a ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
1943: The "Dam Busters" raid, a crucial World War II event, destroyed German dams. You may have seen the 1955 movie depicting the raids and starring Richard Todd and Michael Redgrave.
1951: The first regularly scheduled transatlantic flights began between New York and London.
1929
The first Oscars were presented in a ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
Last meeting was packed with lots of information, we heard from Rebecca Routhan from Te Omanga Hospice, Richard Gibbens spoke about Stones Electrical business, and Allan Brown gave us an update about the Tutukiwi Orchid house and the hopes for enhancing and repurposing the structure to ensure its long term future.
Our main speaker was our very own President-Elect, Katrina Harding with the topic of - Travel - Why not?
Katrina shared her experiences with us, including her life and travel while living in England between the ages of 9 and 12, and her student exchange trip to Argentina as an 18 year old.
These early experiences gave Katrina a love of travel and led her into the travel industry where she has spent the last 15 years in business as a very successful, and hard working travel broker.
Do get in touch with Katrina if you are planning to travel, she'll get you to where you're going and back again !
Wednesday 25th June is our changeover dinner evening. A chance to celebrate outgoing President Cameron and welcome in your new president, me!
It'll be upstairs at the Speights Ale House, Jackson Street, Petone. $60 buffet dinner with fun and entertainment provided. Would love to see you there - pencil in the date NOW!.
Remember to bring some loose change along to the meeting so you can contribute if you answer a Quizlett question incorrectly :), or wish to "Buy The Box".
If you should have any interesting stories about fellow Rotarians then please pass them onto Craig so he can share them at the meeting. Email: craig@packprod.co.nz
Payment is also now available by Eftpos onsite - no excuses!
