President's Report
Hello, kia ora, geia sou (Greek),
I’m winging my way this weekend to Athens to pick up a Viking Odyssey cruise around the Greek Islands (someone has to travel on your behalf!) and so past-President Cameron will lead the meeting this coming week. It’ll be like old times ,
I’ll be on the lookout for signs of Rotary in the Aegean area, or Rotary signs even, and I’ll be sure to let you know if I find any.
I do hope you had a lovely Easter and managed a bit of a break. There are a few events coming up later this month that you might like to attend. Petone Rotary have a dinner in honour of 75 years since their inauguration. They were an off-shoot off our club – at 83 years, we’re the ‘lead’ club in Lower Hutt. That’s on Tuesday 28th April.
Wednesday 29th April we have Fifth Wednesday Drinks at Pickle’s Perch, the Angus Inn from 4.30 pm – a great chance to connect and socialise in a relaxed environment. Ganesh will be the host, so will be looking forward to seeing you there.
Thursday 30th April (a busy week!) at 5.15 pm is the fundraiser movie the Devil Wears Prada 2. $30 pp, please purchase your ticket on the website, link below. It’d be great to get BIG numbers for this movie – we’ve got a new BIG fundraiser in the wings, so any funds will help towards that. More details on that later.
I’ve seen the movie shorts and it looks really fun – a great chance to bring friends along. Chrissi is managing this and will be there on the night.
Both Te Omanga Hospice (speaking at the meeting) and the Salvation Army need our help for their annual collections. Full details in the newsletter. Do let Gaylene know if you can help with either/both events in May. It’s great to be able to give back to charities, given that support works both ways.
I’ll miss seeing you all on Wednesday, but will be thinking of you from my ship in the Aegean Sea.
Tough Guy & Gal Challenge 9 May: We are well short of the numbers we need.
Andy Soper writes:
Thanks to those of you who have already put your names down but we still have a long way to go to reach our 24 volunteers required. I'll be ringing around shortly.
The Tough Guy & Gal Challenge takes place in Wainuiomata on Saturday, 9 May. I’m coordinating this – and will also be entering the event, so there’s an extra incentive for you to be there and have a good laugh!
We need 24 volunteers, to make sure nobody veers away from the course. Your help will raise $3,000 towards our community and youth projects.
There is great camaraderie and it’s such fun to watch competitors struggling through muddy ponds etc. 😊
Please let me know if you are able to help – and talk to anyone you know who might like to help. It’s a good opportunity for young people to get involved in a Rotary project.
The club hosted MP Chris Penk at our last meeting, a joint meeting with the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and visiting Hutt Valley Rotary members.
Chris is Minister of Small Business, and of Building and Construction.
He shared thoughts on current world events and how NZ is effected, particularly with a fuel shortage, and also talked about his portfolios and answered questions from the floor. There was a great atmosphere with over 60 people in attendance.
Our speaker on the 15th of April is Rebecca Routhan - Community and Events Programme Manager at Te Omanga Hospice.
Rebecca is part of the Fundraising Team, responsible for planning and delivering major fundraising events, including the Vintners’ Lunch, the TOH Golf Tournament, and the Annual Street Appeal, as well as a range of internal events.
Rebecca works closely with community groups, schools, and businesses to support their fundraising initiatives that benefit Te Omanga Hospice and also represents the hospice at community and business meetings. We are looking forward to hearing an update from Rebecca and also about the role of the Biography Volunteers.
Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal
The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal is being held from the 4th to the 9th of May.
If you can help in any way, please contact Cameron Millar on:
16th April (message from local Rotary club presidents, Glenda Barratt and Simon Edwards):
On behalf of President Simon and myself we invite yourselves, your Rotary members, including your families and interested parties , to attend a meeting at the Avalon Pavilion 16th April between 7-9pm.
We will be using this time to discuss the Council's Annual Plan and to discuss issues of local significance that are important to you. We would love to see you all there. Please also note: This is meant to be a light discussion feedback time only - a chance for everyone to have their say and for us to be able to collect information/feedback to be relayed to Council officers.
Tuesday 28 April Petone Rotary Club are holding its 75th Anniversary dinner, to which we are invited.
We now know this will be held at The Petone Club on Udy Street Petone commencing around 6.00pm and will include a 3 course buffet style meal.
Further notices will be issued closer to the time and as more details of the programme become available. If you wish to register your interest to receive further updates, please contact Gerry Pallo, Petone Rotary 75th Anniversary Convenor at gernpa@actrix.gen.nz
This will further assist in the event planning for catering purposes.
- Thursday 30 April Come and join us at The Devil Wears Prada 2, Petone Lighthouse 5.45pm. $30 pp, including munchie pack!
Remember to bring some loose change along to the meeting so you can contribute if you answer a Quizlett question incorrectly :), or wish to "Buy The Box".
If you should have any interesting stories about fellow Rotarians then please pass them onto Craig so he can share them at the meeting. Email: craig@packprod.co.nz
Payment is also now available by Eftpos onsite - no excuses!
