COVID-19 couldn’t stop IYM 2020

Hutt@Heart article 28 July 2020

Innovative Young Minds, an initiative between Hutt City Council and The Rotary Club of Hutt City, delivered an enlightening and engaging online 2020 programme.

Usually held in the July school holidays as a residential programme in Lower Hutt, IYM exposes 80 Year 11 and 12 young women to the myriad of research and career opportunities available in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and high-tech engineering).

Due to COVID-19, a residential programme wasn’t an option for 2020, so a one-week online programme was created. 70 young women, including 33 from the Wellington-region, spent the first week of the school holidays taking part in the virtual programme – this was delivered via Zoom and Google Classroom.

“It was really cool to meet lots of young girls who had a passion for STEM. I thoroughly enjoyed the programme and it was so fascinating to listen to many interesting talks from different people in the sciences and maths! I would absolutely love to do it again.” says Vidushi Tandon, a participant from Sacred Heart College.

IYM Online was a success thanks to the efforts of so many people. Sponsors, content providers, mentors, Rotary Clubs, community funders, operational staff and the IYM Charitable Trust. We all had a common goal " to increase the number of young women participating in STEMM study and careers by showcasing all the opportunities available to them." Thanks to their support and vision, and despite Covid19 disruptions, we were able to provide an exciting and challenging online programme for our students.

But let's hear it from our contributors and participants.

“I would like to thank you for the opportunity to be a mentor for the programme. I was so impressed with the way the young women in my group worked together despite the difficulty of not knowing each other, the ease at which they collaborated online, and the enthusiasm and insight they brought to the challenge. I feel like I learnt more than the young women who I was mentoring!"
Innovation Challenge mentor Leila Nicholson, Biosecurity Intelligence Analyst - Biosecurity Intelligence Team, Ministry for Primary Industries - Manatū Ahu Matua

“If these young women keep up the confidence and motivation I saw, our future is going to benefit from a fabulous generation of problem-solvers.”
Innovation Challenge judge Vanessa Oakley, General Manager - Strategy & Business Operations, Chorus

"I enjoyed hearing from all the successful women in STEM and the life advice they offered along with insight into their jobs and day to day work"Petra Prekopa- 2020 IYM Online Participant

"Absolutely amazing and eye-opening! I loved the programme a lot and it left me feeling very inspired! Thank you!" Amy Pollard  - 2020 IYM Online Participant
